For over 138 years Calvert County has hosted an annual fair and now the Calvert County Fair Board is also hosting a square on the Calvert Barn Quilt Trail. The Arts Council of Calvert County is proud to be the sponsor of the County Fair Square, which was designed by Traci King, who based her colors and patterns on the Maryland flag, with a center inset of the Calvert County flag featuring a tobacco leaf. Many thanks to the Calvert County Fair Board and to Traci and Jamie King, Janet Jones, Sue Mills, Bruce and Pam Schmale for its design, painting and installation. The barn, located at the Calvert Fairgrounds, was moved to its current location in 2001 from its original site on the campus of the College of Southern Maryland on Williams Road. The barn was constructed in the mid-1940s by Clifton Wood, late of Calvert County, after he and his wife purchased the property from Sedwick Bowen and farmed it. The barn relocation was funded by the Calvert County Board of Commissioners for the structure to be preserved. A work crew of six members of a Charles County Amish family, Elmer Hertzler and his four sons and one nephew, moved the barn in less than a month in the Spring of 2001.
